I think a committee that is made up of parents, teachers and community members needs to be started. Meetings should be monthly and open to anyone who has an interest in the success of the students.
The teacher needs to come up with a plan and submit it to the Principal for approval. The first thing on the agenda should be to have a college night and a career night or day. I would invite as many representatives from local colleges, easy in Houston, to have information regarding the various degree programs they offer. I would also include our local community college to talk about their programs and associate degrees.
I would also ask fellow teachers and community members for leads on anyone who would be willing to come and speak on a career day about what they do and how they got there. Including FOX reporters, NASA employees, Fashion designers, Musicians and Artists. Living near Houston offers a variety to choose from.

Also, financial advisors from the various colleges need to attend. A day dedicated to the explanation of applying for financial aid and on how to find and apply for the millions of scholarships that are offered, would be a huge help in my area.
